Studio Update!

I haven't really shared here on the bloggity that my sister and are now sharing a studio space in the historic down town Columbus area known as Franklinton.

We share our space with many other artists, musicians, crafters and performers. There are so many wonderful events that happen there, all cultivating a creative community.

You can read more about the history of the studio over HERE or look at upcoming events to plan your visit to the studio HERE!

With this new space, I have been able to offer more kid art workshops and kid birthday painting parties! It has been such a fun adventure so far and I LOVE having an inspiring, sun-lit, beautiful space to create in!

I would love to have you come check out our space some time! You can visit the EVENTS or CLASSES page to find upcoming art events!

Sweet, Creative, Summer and tips for Creative Block

Well, I am nearing the final weeks of my FIRST summer off (from teaching that is).

Not off from much else! Life goes on ya know!

It has been completely refreshing and when I reflect back to when it started I see just how much I've accomplished.

When the school year wrapped, I was feeling creatively zapped. Those cute little school kids just took every ounce I had! It was a great school year and love being able to share my creativity with students and colleagues.

I was aching to create, but nothing would come, nothing 'good' anyway. I felt lost and confused about who I was as an artist, but continued to paint and create despite of it.

It wasn't too far into my summer that we took a family vacation to visit family in Arizona and DUDE did that get my creative engines revving again.

I am absolutely in love with the culture, art and landscape there. Perhaps it was just a change of scenery or maybe its just something magical about cactuses.

Either way, I had a deep desire to create boldly and to just let the art out!

Not only did the art come out, but I've been able to meet so many other artists locally (and afar) and all together I'm just feel like I'm running full speed ahead.

I am making SO many things that I love and am getting my art 'out there' more than I ever have before.

AND I have super exciting news that I can't share just yet... but all together, its just been one great, sweet, creative, summer.

I have learned so much about myself and the creative process this summer.

If you are feeling creatively stuck, here's some things that helped me.

1. Do NOT stress about a creative block.
It's natural and part of the process. NO ONE is ever 'on' 100% of the time.

2. Don't stop creating.
Even if its complete yuck, there is always something to glean from mistakes. Even, dare I say - 'crafty' kid stuff can be a learning opportunity.

3. Find Inspiration.
For me it's traveling. Seeing new places, new colors, patterns and textures. Photograph what you find and save it for later. Reference it when you sit down to make.

4. Collaborate with a friend.
Meet someone new that inspires you. Most people are totally up for a coffee with another creative junky. Brainstorm or pick their brain on their dreams.

5. Stay true.
You are you. No one else can make or do what you do. Find out what you really love and go for it. To me that's color. I absolutely love bright bold colors. I never wanted to stray from that, it's just who I am!

So go get it babes. I'm off to enjoy the final days of summer.

Will share more on the EXCITING NEWS soon!

Life and Art Update!

Sweet summer time is here and for me that means my FIRST summer break! To be honest I was (and still am) a little uncomfortable with all this free time! It's also the first time that Ada and I have been home together for an extended period of time - no childcare - since my maternity leave, 4 years ago!

Hey all you stay at home moms, I get you now. Like, I completely. get. you. Kudos.

Any way, thought I'd just update you on what we've been up to and how I have been creatively restoring myself. I loved every minute of my first year of teaching, but it left my creativity zapped!!!

For starters I have been sort of keeping up with a Summer Drawing Challenge I kicked off with my students just before we all split for break. There is more info over on my school art blog if you are interested in participating or having your kids give it a whirl!

Also, on a small side note, I was gifted this art tote by a family from school who has 3 daughters that I had in art class this last year. It is the greatest thing for toting all  my art supplies around! Such a life saver since we are constantly creating in practically every room of our house.

Keeping this one busy, besides use of the TV or iPad is always a challenge. I have tried to come up with a little bit of a schedule so we have things to do and look forward to each week.

Of course creating plays a part in what we do on the daily, but there are days when we have just GOT to get out of the house! We have been frequenting the local library and just gobbling up all sorts of inspiration and learning from books.

Each week, we come home with a new stack. I think the books have been playing a huge role in helping me gain my creative energy back.

We've been getting art books, short children's chapter books about fairies, gardening books, books with great illustrations and of course books about Anna and Elsa and Sophia too....

A big source of inspiration for me is pretty and inviting spaces. I love the ideas in this Great Gardens for Kids book. We will definitely be putting some of these ideas to use in the backyard this summer.

There are both large and small projects. Everything from building play areas to making small herb gardens.

Even reading some of Ada's children's books has brought me so much inspiration. The Wonder Garden is about different animal habitats. The cover alone is magical.

I really love the illustrations.

Teaching art this last year has really opened up my thought process on making art. I think I was so inspired by all the topics and techniques I was teaching and the art that the kids were making, that I got a bit lost in it all.

Gloriously lost.

Now that I have a bit more free time to work on creating my own art, I am feeling lost as to what my artistic style is. I know art that I like when I see it, but for some reason, I'm struggling to make my own art that I love.

I have been experimenting with new and different art supplies and just giving myself time and grace to create. I've been visiting old art journals looking for threads of a theme or concepts that can reignite my own artistic style.

I can sense that I am slowly coming out of the creative funk I've been in, but I don't want to rush it. I want it to come naturally and freeing when it does.

We are traveling to Arizona soon and I am looking forward to a new environment and to gaining further inspiration from the desert. Sort of obsessed with cactuses lately. More to come on that!

I'm now off to clean all the creative messes we've been leaving. They are seriously everywhere! The house is so much more 'lived in' when we are home all day! I'm learning a whole new life balance these days and it feels awkward and some times like I'm not doing enough to keep up.

Summer you are sweet and so fleeting, praying that we make the most of our days together!

Upcoming Art Shows!

Now that the school art show is over, I've had a little more time to think about making my own art pieces. I mean I never really stopped making art. I am always making or creating in some way, but I have been working with more focus on my art.

I have two upcoming art and craft shows, so I've been painting like crazy to have items to sell!

I have not participated in an 'art show' since I was in college! But I am excited to get out from behind the computer, to meet people and get my art out there too. This is a new goal for me this year.

One of the events is on Mother's Day weekend, so I thought having some hand painted cards was a no-brainer! I know I'm gonna need a few cards to keep for the moms in my own life!

I love painting flowers and in a patterned style. I don't feel strained or stressed painting this way. Adding the black contrast with sharpie to the bright colors is my favorite final detail.

And pineapples. Still love those. Also one of my favorite things to paint.

I'll be keeping an up to date list of events that I'll be doing on the Events Page here on the blog if you want to drop by for a visit! I'll be featuring these hand painted cards, small art pieces (original and prints), my hand painted leather earrings and some home accessories too!
